BRAMPTON, Ont. – The Brampton Battalion made right winger Matt Smyth the
first
of 17 players it chose Saturday in the Ontario Hockey League’s Priority
Selection.
Smyth scored 48 goals and
added 44 assists for 92 points with 102 penalty minutes
in 60 games with the Markham Islanders minor midgets last season.
“I
wasn’t sure where I’d be going,” said the five-foot-11, 165-pound Smyth, who
was selected with the 14th pick of the first round. “But I met with Stan
Butler and
I really liked him.” A resident of Orlando, Fla., who will
turn 16 on June 12, Smyth moved to Ontario to further his hockey career
after playing in a prospects
tournament last spring.
